Decaying Neutrinos and the Flattening of the Galactic Halo
نویسنده
چکیده
The recently constructed Dehnen-Binney set of mass models for the Galaxy is used to show that the decaying neutrino theory for the ionisation of the interstellar medium (Sciama 1990a, 1993) requires the neutrino halo of the Galaxy to be as flattened as is observationally permitted (axial ratio q = 0.2 or shape E8). The argument involves an evaluation of the contribution of red-shifted decay photons from the cosmological distribution of neutrinos to the extragalactic diffuse background at 1500Å. This contribution must be as large as is observationally permitted. These two requirements depend on the decay lifetime τ in potentially conflicting ways. For consistency to be achieved τ must lie within 30 per cent of 10 seconds.

Two measures of the shape of the Milky Way’s dark halo
In order to test the reliability of determinations of the shapes of galaxies’ dark matter halos, we have made such measurements for the Milky Way by two independent methods. First, we have combined the measurements of the over-all mass distribution of the Milky Way derived from its rotation curve and the measurements of the amount of dark matter in the solar neighborhood obtained from stellar k...

The distribution of shapes of galaxies' dark halos provides a basic test for models of galaxy formation. To-date, few dark halo shapes have been measured, and the results of different methods appear contradictory. Here, we add to the sample of measured shapes by calculating the flattening of the Milky Way's dark halo based on the manner in which the gas layer in the Galaxy flares with radius. W...
متن کاملThe Flattening of Globular Clusters
In the three nearest luminous galaxies, the Milky Way System, the Andromeda Galaxy and NGC 5128 the brightest globular clusters are rounder than the faintest ones. On the other hand (contrary to some previous results) the flattening of individual LMC clusters is found to be independent of their luminosities. This suggests the possibility that the relationship between the flattening and luminosi...
متن کاملPotential-density pairs and vertical tilt of the stellar velocity ellipsoid
We define new potential-density pairs and examine the impact of the potential flattening on the vertical velocity ellipsoid tilt, δ. By means of numerical integrations and analytical calculations, we estimate δ in a variety of galactic potentials. We show that at 1 kpc above the Galactic plane at the solar radius, δ can differ by 5 degrees, depending on whether the dark matter halo is flat or s...
متن کاملBaryonic Dark Matter and the Diffuse γ-ray Background
We show that the baryonic gas content of the halo of our galaxy can be probed by performing a multipole expansion on the distribution of diffuse background gamma-ray emission. While the monopole moment (isotropic background) can be used to constrain the baryonic fraction of the halo gas, the quadrupole to monopole ratio is a sensitive probe of the distribution of gas in the halo, i.e. the degre...
